While in grad school studying experimental psychology at San Diego State University my thesis chair and lead researcher, Al Hillix,  gave me an room of new Apple II computers, “now you can set up a lab for our students to use in their research….”

At a small nonprofit a board member mentioned putting my Teen Grief Support Group Curriculum up. This would save copying and mailing the 103 page document….A colleague started me on Frontpage and I became the accidental webmaster…. also the accidental computer specialist for family, friends and colleagues.

Now I’ve pretty much retired from bereavement counseling – at least working in hospices. I continue with my love for exploring computers and the web. So I’ve returned to school to upgrade my understanding of computers: Html, CSS, PHP, Dreamweaver, WordPress, Joomla. My goals are outlined below. As I’ve discussed with others this project, I’ve had two fellow board members ( I’m on the board of Survivors of Suicide Loss and their maintain the site) ask me to maintain their business’ sites.

Several interns are now licensed or will be soon and are setting up private practice. Some are in the process of setting up their sites to market their practice. I’ve been in conversations with them about this process. So this blog and my business is about gathering, exploring, playing with tools and techniques that help build, maintain and improve websites.

The goal of my web shop is to help small businesses and non-profits improve their websites by:

  • Finding the best platform such as WordPress or Joomla,
  • Having their sites easily found on search engines by clients,
  • Clients will know what is offered,
  • Clients will find what they need,
  • Find what else is offered.

This blog is to document the adventure of setting up Scott’s Web Shop

  • How to build a site,
  • Use a blog?
  • Use a cms (What is a CMS?)?
  • If so which one,
  • WordPress?
  • Typepad? Drupal, Joomla, or?
  • How to have the site be recognized and ranked by the search engines,
  • Once the clients are on the site, how to assure they’ll find what they want – and you want them to find,
  • How to create a pleasing and informative site that navigates well.
  • It is also a place where we can share questions and problems and maybe resolve some.
